Harper Dry Lake
December 2013
Claro Walnut, American Ash, Rock Maple, Camphor
The roots of this piece sprout from my time spent in the deserts of Southern California, exploring the spaces, textures, contrasts and mental spaces that defined that time. The stark contrast of the blue sky with wisps of cloud and the warm hues of the desertscape works to portray their individual details and intricacies. In my choice of wood I attempt to utilize a similar tactic, allowing the viewers eye to see two intertwined fields working to pop each others beauty. The pieces form and the placement of the drawer box are meant to play off the structures found in the desert. One may notice the rectilinearity references pieces and architecture found in the Mid-Century Modern movement, often found in the SoCal desertscape. Leading me to question whether the desert inspired me as it did the architecture or the architecture of the desert inspired me.
